Q&A with Masana Mbhalati better known as Cardo.
Truefelooi: What does your name Cardo mean and where did it come from?
Cardo: Cardo is the name given to me by close friends I met in my first year in joburg. It comes from my old stage name, Rek Ricardo. My friend advised me to change it because my name was too long and didn't make sense lol...especially to girls
Truefelooi: When and why did you start rapping?
Cardo: I started rapping at the age of 13...that was in 2004. My brother inspired me to rap because he was and still is an amazing lyricist. So I picked up the pen and I've never looked back since then.
Truefelooi: How do you define the type of artist you are?
Cardo: I'm the young, jiggy, wavey Neen Lord lol. I make music for people to dance to. South Africans love dancing and so do I, so I make music for people to stand up and vibe to.
Truefelooi: What are you working on right now?
Cardo: I just completed my debut EP, THE FOREVER COMBO. It's 6 songs with a bonus jam. Feel good music for the feet and soul. It will be available on all digital music platforms on the 6th of October 2016. Amazing production, a class features and a timeless sound.
Truefelooi: Which songs should your supporters/fans look out for on the EP?
Cardo: Track 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Truefelooi: How was it like growing up in Tzaneen, Limpopo?
Cardo: It was the most beautiful experience of my life. Neen (better known as Tzaneen) is a tropical paradise. Clean air, beautiful people and it's always sunny...so we never have dark days lol. Neen taught me how to be patient and careful because it's such a small town, so everything is slow there lol...but I love it.
Truefelooi: What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
Cardo: I grew up performing and recording music...so all my memories are on stage or in the booth.
Truefelooi: Which famous HipHop/Rap artist do you admire? Why?
Cardo: Riky. He has this "never give up" attitude, which I do as well. I admire people who can get beat down and still stand up and fight for what they believe in.
Truefelooi: Give us the top 5 artist you would like to work with in the near future, it can be tomorrow or even today???
Cardo: Riky Rick, Da Les, Sjava, Refi Sings and Floda
Truefelooi: How do you handle mistakes during a performance?
Cardo: I do a backflip...lol I'm kidding. I rehears before every performance so I don't have to fix mistakes
Truefelooi: What is the most common thing you will find Cardo doing for recreation?
Cardo: I take walks fam. The city is so hectic and you barely get a minute to just clear your mind and breathe. So I take walks everytime I get a chance to.
Truefelooi: What does music mean to you?
Cardo: It's my life.
Truefelooi: Finally! What advice would you give to upcoming HipHop/Rap artists viewing or going through this QnA right now?
Cardo: Never try to be something you're not. Be the best version of yourself Bro....and stay jiggy.
